#Eda85daysinJapan | Chapter 4 (Hokuriku) | Kanazawa – Port Cruise Terminal & Yamato Soy Sauce & Miso
🗓️ May – June 2026
📍 Kanazawa Port Cruise Terminal & Yamato Soy Sauce & Miso
Nice to look at Kanazawa from another angle, so I decided to visit the cruise terminal. It was very chill — only a few people had come for the weekend — and the space felt relaxed and open. A glass wall faces the Sea of Japan and the roof arches like white waves, giving a cinematic view of sky and water. Since the Edo period this coast was a Kitamaebune stop between Osaka and Hokkaido, and the old port towns of Kanaiwa and Ono grew up from that trade, which you can still sense in the waterfront streets. The terminal itself is new and free to walk, with an observation deck and a restaurant looking over the port. After that I headed to the market, then walked about 20 minutes to Yamato Soy Sauce & Miso — ヤマト醤油味噌 — in Ono, founded in 1911, its white chimney standing by the water as a local landmark. It felt a bit like visiting a sake or whisky place, but this time it was all about miso: Koji Park — 糀パーク — has a shop, tastings, and a free koji tour that explains the process. I tried amazake ice cream for the first time — surprisingly good and subtly sweet. Port on one side, fermentation on the other, a quiet but rich contrast.
