#Eda85daysinJapan | Chapter 4 (Hokuriku) | Toyama City – Ink Museum & Kurehayama Park

🗓️ 13 June 2026

📍 Toyama City

After a month in Kanazawa, started to move out. Headed to Toyama City before going up to Tateyama. Once I settled in, went to the Toyama Prefectural Ink Painting Museum (The Suiboku Museum, Toyama), then hiked up to Kurehayama Park Observatory.

The exhibition was amazing and caught me by surprise. The interior was also another exhibition of a Japanese garden. The Suiboku Museum, Toyama is one of the few art galleries in Japan where you can learn about the background of the modern Japanese style of suiboku-ga, an ancient ink wash painting technique that originated in China. The permanent exhibitions include works by prominent modern suiboku-ga painters such as Taikan Yokoyama and Seiho Takeuchi, as well as various artists from Toyama. Special exhibitions feature a variety of beautiful Japanese art forms such as dyed textiles and ceramics in addition to suiboku-ga. Other facilities include a screening hall, library and Tea Ceremony Room “Bokkouan”. It really does provide a cultural experience that will soothe your soul.

After that, the hike up to Kurehayama Park Observatory. It took me about 30 minutes to go up. Quite a popular place, with views over Toyama city, the Tateyama range, and the bay. I kind of got lost when I tried to get back down to the city, yet found the Kureha Hills Footpath Bridge and Amandan Peak nearby. That gave me an even better view of Toyama city with the sunset as the background.
