#Eda85daysinJapan | Chapter 4 (Hokuriku) | Day Trip from Kanazawa – Himi & Takaoka

🗓️ 11 June 2026

📍 Himi, Takaoka

Still stationed in Kanazawa, took a day trip to Himi first, then Takaoka.

On the way to Himi, managed to snap some photos at Amaharashi Station (雨晴). Didn’t stop there though.

Himi — lunch there and checked out the town. Super quiet. In addition to its seafood and the views over Toyama Bay, Himi is also the birthplace of manga artist Fujiko Fujio Ⓐ. His works are all over town. I walked through Manga Road — the roughly 1.8 km stretch from JR Himi Station toward Kitaomachi, lined with monuments of characters like Ninja Hattori-kun and his friends. Fishing port town, quiet afternoon feel.

Then Takaoka. The town was quieter than I expected — probably because the JR station was built outside the main town. Went to the Takaoka Great Buddha — the big bronze one completed in 1933, one of the three great Buddhas people mention alongside Nara and Kamakura. It stands about 15.85 m tall (including the base) and weighs 65 tons. Earlier wooden versions kept burning down, so they rebuilt this one in bronze using local casting skill. People also call it the “most handsome” Buddha because of the face. Then the Fujiko F. Fujio Hometown Gallery. It was exciting to check it out because it’s almost everyone’s childhood memory for HK kids at my age haha. He spent his boyhood in Takaoka and created Doraemon. Walked through the famous “Anywhere Door” and stepped into the world of his creations. Original artwork from Doraemon and other classics, plus personal items he once used. There’s a bronze Doraemon monument there too. Every original artwork is exhibited at Doraemon’s exact height of 129.3 cm.
